Maberly, Ontario

Maberly is a hamlet in Lanark County, Ontario, Canada, approximately 25 kilometers west of Perth, Ontario and 100 kilometers west of Ottawa. Nearby is the Silver Lake Provincial Park (Ontario).

Maberly is located on Highway 7 (part of the Trans-Canada Highway), and is a short distance north of the main Canadian Pacific Railway line between Toronto and Ottawa.

The area around Maberly is typical Canadian Shield consisting mainly of rocky hills and lakes, with little arable land, so it is more suitable for hunting and logging than farming. The first Europeans to settle in the area were Scottish and Irish immigrants, who provided most of the placenames. Maberly, however, was named by the Canadian Post Office Department Secretary in 1865 in honour of William Leader Maberly, his counterpart in the United Kingdom and the butt of satire in one of Anthony Trollope's novels.
