Ma Liu Shui

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ma Liu Shui (Chinese: 馬料水 or originally 馬尿水; pinyin: Mǎ Liào Shuǐ) is an area in Sha Tin District of the New Territories, Hong Kong.

The area is faces the Tolo Harbour. There is a ferry pier providing regular ferry service to remote areas such as Tap Mun and Ping Chau in the northeast New Territories. There were ferries to Wu Kai Sha but now it has been replaced by a bridge across the Shing Mun River Channel to the Ma On Shan area.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong is located in Ma Liu Shui. Due to the fact that the Chinese University of Hong Kong is a famous university within Hong Kong, many people in Hong Kong find it more precise to refer to the area as Chinese University or University, rather than Ma Liu Shui.

Yucca de Lac, a famous high-class western restaurant was located in Ma Liu Shui. It closed in October 2005.

[edit] Transport

There is a KCR East Rail station in Ma Liu Shui just by the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The station was originally known as the Ma Liu Shui Station, but was later renamed University Station. This is also due to the fact that the Chinese University of Hong Kong is more well-known than the name "Ma Liu Shui". The KCR is planning to build another station called "Science Park" in the Ma Liu Shui area.

Next to the railway station, there is a bus terminus. There are several bus routes of the KMB and several routes of Green minibuses. Most of them go to the nearby Ma On Shan area.

The following KMB bus routes terminate at the University KCR Station bus terminus:

  • 87K: Kam Ying Court, Ma On Shan <-> University KCR Station
  • 87S: Kam Ying Court, Ma On Shan <-> University KCR Station
  • 272K: Hong Kong Science Park <-> University KCR Station
  • 289K: Chevalier Garden, Ma On Shan <-> University KCR Station

Cancelled bus routes which formerly terminated at the University KCR Station Bus Terminus:

  • 84K: Chevalier Garden, Ma On Shan <-> University KCR Station
  • 287K: Ma On Shan Town Centre <-> University KCR Station

[edit] Name derivation

Ma Liu Shui is directly and phonetically translated to English from "馬料水" in Cantonese. It literally means "the water that the horses feed on".

Coincidentally, the Chinese character "料" (Mandarin pinyin: liào; Cantonese Jyutping: liu6) has very similar pronunciation to "尿" (Mandarin pinyin: niào; Cantonese Jyutping: niu6), which means "urine".

Some people humorously call the place "馬尿水", which means "the horses' urine". Interestingly, this is in fact the original name of the area.
