From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
M.N. Vijayan (born 8 June 1930 in Lokamaleshwaram near Kodungallur, Kerala) is a respected writer, speaker and former university profesor. He is sometimes called "Vijayan Mash" by his students and readers, where Mash means teacher, in part because he was a university teacher for many years.
He studied in Pathinettarayalam L.P. School, Kodungallur Boys High School, Ernakulam Maharajas College, and Ernakulam Law College. He took Master of Arts in Malayalam Language and Literature from Madras University. He joined Madras New College as a teacher in 1952. He joined Government Brennen College, Thalassery, in 1960 as a Malayalam Lecturer. He retired in 1985.
M.N. Vijayan worked as the editor of the cultural weekly Deshabhimani owned by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on the request of its leaders. He was long time President of Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sangham (Progressive Association for Art and Letters). He had to vacate the editorialship of Deshabhimani when a section of provincial leaders of Communist Party felt he was not supportive to social democratic line. He opposed the attempt by some state level leaders and other leftist intellectuals to accept the foreign funds to do political work. He is one among who opposes "Identity politics" replacing the class politics.
[edit] Published books
Most of M.N. Vijayan's writings are compilation of his speeches. He is considered to be a powerful orator, who has his own audience. His writings and speeches are very difficult to translate. He mixes psychology, Marxism, social science and literature to interpret contemporary world. Each sentence supposedly can be read between lines to give a new interpretation of life. Some prominent writers, including M. Krishnan Nair, T. Padmanabhan and V.C. Sreejan, have admitted that it is difficult to understand M. N. Vijayan's writings as he does not follow a definite grammar or an approved way of formal talk. He is considered to speak gently but powerfully. His humor is philosophical.
Thousands of young thinking youths follow his advice. He is a known psychologist and many visit his home seeking his advice. Though he was chosen for awards he politely refused to accept these awards. He simply believed that two literary works can not be compared to give more points to one to be selected for an award.
