The M1 is designated stretches of National Highway 1 (A1) that are of Dual-carriageway or Motorway Standard.

Such stretches of highway are:

• Queensland
  • Bruce Highway from Cooroy to Bald Hills.
  • Gateway Motorway from Bald Hills to Eight Mile Plains.
  • Pacific Motorway from Eight Mile Plains to Tugun.

• New South Wales
  • Pacific Highway from:
    • Chinderah to Yelgun.
    • Brunswick Heads to Bangalow.
    • Coffs Harbour to Bonville.
    • Coolongolook to Bulahdelah.
  • Sydney-Newcastle Freeway (Also known as the F3)
  • Southern Freeway (Also known as the F6)
    • From Waterfall to Bulli Tops.

• Victoria
  • Princes Highway from:
    • Traralgon to Berwick.
  • Monash Freeway from:
    • Berwick to Melbourne.
  • CityLink (southern link section):
    • Central Melbourne (through Domain and Burnley Tunnels).
  • West Gate Freeway from:
    • Melbourne to West Gate Interchange.
  • Princes Freeway from:
    • West Gate Interchange to Geelong.

• South Australia
  • South-Eastern Freeway from:
    • Murray Bridge to Crafers
  • Adelaide-Crafers Highway from:
    • Crafters to Adelaide.
