M-157 serves as a connector route for motorists traveling between M-55 and M-18. It is the fourth-shortest trunkline in the state of Michigan. [1]

Historical notes: On 1931-08-10, an M-157 was designated on a routing just to the west of the current M-157 as a cut off between M-55 and then US 27 (current M-18). This trunkline was decommissioned when the designation was transferred one year later to the current parallel routing on 1932-08-10. The former M-157 was abandoned as a roadway and obliterated at this time.
