[edit] Routing

Its routing has been largely unchaged since designation. It was originally planned in 1935 to continue to through the Porcupine Mountains to end at Bessemer.[1] The highway would have reached the Black Harbor area on Lake Superior north of Bessemer. It would have followed Gogebic CR 513 to US 2. That section was never built, likely as a result of the creation of the state park.

Many "shoreline drives" were being created during this time frame along the Great Lakes shoreline. Several in the UP were never built, including the extended M-107. According to Michigan Highways:

Most people today will agree not completing all of these "drives" ended up being a very positive thing for the Porcupine Mountains area, which is now the largest unspoiled wilderness area east of the Mississippi. A state highway through the middle of such an area would have increased logging activities and possibly stalled the creation of the state park. For those reasons, M-107 will forever be a "spur route" ending at Lake of the Clouds.[1]

Lake of the Clouds is a lake located in Ontonagon County in the U.S. state of Michigan within the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park at 46°48′14″N, 89°45′08″W. The lake is situated in a valley between two ridges in the Porcupine Mountains. Surrounded by virgin wilderness and stunning vistas, the lake is a popular destination for hikers, campers, and fishermen. The lake is a prominent feature of the park, and can be viewed at the Lake of the Clouds Overlook at the west terminus of M-107.

[edit] Trivia

M-107 is only partially plowed in the winter. From the Winter Sports Complex to the western terminus, the highway is classified as "seasonal" and left unplowed all winter. It is maintained during the winter for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling usage only.
