München Karlsplatz railway station

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

München Karlsplatz (Stachus) is an underground U-Bahn and S-Bahn station near the Karlsplatz in central Munich. It is one of the busiest stations in Munich, as nearly every Tram line and S-Bahn line calls in at this station. There is also a U-Bahn station with two lines stopping here. The trams visit an overground station on a traffic-island of the Altstadtring.

The underground facilities were built as part of the S-Bahn tunnel through central Munich in the early 1970s.

The first level, just under roadlevel, holds a big shopping mall which will be renovated in the next years. Large shops have branches here, e.g. Kaufhof or Woolworths

The third level holds the S-Bahn station with two tracks and three platforms. The island platform is for boarding only and the outside platforms are for disembarking. The tunnel runs in an east-west direction. The lines S1, S2, S4, S5, S6, S7 and S8 stop at this station.

The fifth level holds the U-Bahn station with two tracks and one platform. Lines U5 and U4 stop here. Trains travel in an north-west direction. The station is deepest in the whole network and also has the longest escalator.

Levels two and four only hold transit and ticket sales.
