[edit] English translation of "Maelardalens hoegskola"
According to the university's website, all English language text refers to "Mälardalen University." This might not be entirely accurate, but the article's getting moved anyway. --Adamrush 17:28, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
- According to the official list of translations published by the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs (Utrikes namnbok, UD 02.049) the term "university" cannot be used for Swedish higher education instituion formally established as a högskola, unless combined with the term "college". Therefore, Mälardalen University College or University College of Mälardalen is the correct term to be used.
- The use of the term "university" is a highly disputable matter and a formal application to the Minister for Education, Reserach and Culture from the University College of Mälardalen to be vested as a full university has been denied. It is currently not under review, in fact the minister in charge has publicly denounced all such plans. The political opposition has clearly stated that they are not going to institute new universities, should they win the upcoming elections. To circumvent this, the University College of Mälardalen and Örebro University has formed a project group with the goal to merge the two entities. So far, this project has been declined by faculty, students and those vested with the power of decision (ie. National Authority for Higher Education and the politicians in the Riksdag).
- To justify the use of the incorrect name, Adamrush refers to a website that is the product of a wannabe-university-rector and her staff. This cannot be argued as NPOV. However, the University College of Mälardalen and its students all seem to agree that the name to be remembered (and thus the term that will be sought after in the encyclopedia?) is Mälardalen University. Given my personal strong objections to this (ab)use, I shall not demand a change of the name of the article, but I do suggest other wikipedians to look into the matter. 217.167.206.126 19:37, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
Changed Vice Chancellor to Rector.
