Lyttelton Road Tunnel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Lyttelton Road Tunnel links the New Zealand cities of Christchurch and Lyttelton. The current tunnel was completed in 1964 and is currently the longest road tunnel in New Zealand. For a few hours every year, cyclists are allowed to bike through the tunnel. This event usually co-insides with a cycling conference.
Because the tunnel is sloped from the Heathcote side down to the port (even though it seems flat), it is possible to put a vehicle in neutral gear, or even turn the engine off, and still maintain speed. In fact, many vehicles will slowly increase speed to a point where it is breaking the speed limit by a long shot and applying brakes is necessary so to not ram a vehicle in front.
