In Arthurian legend, Lyonesse (also referred to as Lionese, Lionesse, Linesse, and Lyonorr) is the sister of Lynet (the Savage Damsel, who leds Sir Gareth to the Castle Perilous to save Lyonesse). Lyonesse's castle is besieged by the Red Knight of the Red Lands, who, in some retellings of the story, wishes to marry her. Lyonesse is yet another gorgeous damsel in distress who waits in her castle for a champion to rescue and marry her. In the end of most versions of this story, Gareth marries Lyonesse, but in Alfred Tennyson's "Idylls of the King," he marries Lynet instead. In Gerald Morris' book "The Savage Damsel and the Dwarf," Lyonesse is portrayed as a beautiful yet cruel airhead.
