From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lyncus or Lynkestis is an ancient region in Macedonia. It is located in the valley between the Baba and Nidze mountain ranges. Today, it covers the southern parts of the Republic of Macedonia and the northern parts of Greece, expanding to the Prespa lakes and covering the modern cities of Florina (Lerin) and Bitola . Its ancient inhabitants were a Macedonian tribe known as Lyncestians, and king Philip II of Macedon incorporated Lyncus into his kingdom at around 358BC. Today its inhabitants, as well as the inhabitants of the whole Macedonian region, are Macedonians descended from the Slavic tribes that migrated into Balkan penninsula in the 6th century AD who mixed with the local ancient Macedonian, Illyrian, and Thracian populations that they came upon.
