Lynn Thomas was born in Memphis, Tennessee on December 29, 1959. He is the son of Rev. Don and Ann Thomas. He has one older sibling, Mary. As a child and young person Lynn lived in: Sheffield, AL, Birmingham, AL, Savannah, TN, and Fayetteville, TN.

Lynn attended Bethel College in McKenzie, TN and graduated Magna Cum Lauda with a major in Religion and minor in Biology. While in high school and college Lynn traveled extensively, he spent summers in: Colombia, South America; Liberia, Africa; Surinam, South America; Republic of South Africa and Haiti. After college Lynn attended graduate school in Pasadena, CA (Fuller Seminary) and Memphis, TN. He graduated in 1985 with a Master of Divinity from Memphis Theological Seminary.

Lynn became a pastor when he was 18 years old, while in college. During his college and graduate school year he pastored Mill Creek CP Church and Adamsville First Presbyterian Church. After graduation from seminary he married Nona R. Young.

In 1987 Lynn was employed by the Bd. of Missions of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Lynn and Nona, and their new baby Aaron moved to Costa Rica to study Spanish for one year. They then moved to Colombia, South America for 10 years. While in Colombia they lived in Manizales, Armenia and Medellin. Lynn worked as a church planter and pastor. They were in Colombia during the height of the Mafia Drug War. Lynn and Nona had three more children while in Colombia: Micaiah, Desiree and Caleb.

In 1997 the Thomases moved to Birmingham, AL. Lynn became the director of Cross-Culture New Church Development for the CP Bd. of Missions. Lynn's responsibility was to develop non-English speaking churches in the USA. During the late 1990s and early 2000s Lynn helped develop over 40 non-Engish speaking CP churches and missions in the USA.
