Lymphoepithelioma
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lymphoepithelioma is a type of nasopharyngeal carcinoma characterized by prominent infiltration of lymphocytes in the area involved by tumor. Lymphoepitheliomas are poorly differentiated tumors and in the WHO system are described as type III. Many cases are associated with Epstein-Barr virus infection.
Lymphoepitheliomas may also be called a Schmincke-Regaud tumor, named after German pathologist Alexander Schminke and French radiologist Claude Regaud.
Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinomas are carcinomas that arise outside of the nasopharynx but resemble a lymphoepithelioma histologically. Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinomas may be found in almost any epithelial organ, but are most known for being found in the lung or the cervix.
