Lydden Race Circuit is the UK's shortest road racing circuit (many shorter oval tracks exist) at just under 1 mile, based about half-way between Canterbury and Dover in Kent. The so-called "home of rallycross" (as the sport was born here on February 4 1967 with its first ever event, won by Vic Elford in a Porsche 911) is mainly used for rallycross, saloon and sports car racing as well as motorcycle racing. Its founder and proprietor for many years was the late Bill Chesson († 1999), but nowadays it is owned by the McLaren Formula 1 Team and rented to the British Motorcycle Racing Club.
