From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra (Luxembourgish: Lëtzebuerger philharmoneschen Orchester, French: Orchestre philharmonique du Luxembourg), abbreviated to OPL, is the national orchestra of Luxembourg, and is based in Luxembourg City, in the south of the Grand Duchy. Its main home is the Philharmonie Luxembourg, a large concert hall opened in 2005 in the Kirchberg quarter in the north-east of the city.

The orchestra was founded in 1933 as the in-house orchestra of RTL, named the RTL Grand Symphony Orchestra (French: Grand orchestre symphonique de RTL). In 1996, it was made the national orchestra and given its current name.

The music director for the 20062007 season is Emmanuel Krivine. From 2002 until 2006, Bramwell Tovey held the position. Only five other conductors have held the position: Henri Pensis, Carl Melles, Louis de Froment, Leopold Hager, and David Shallon.
