Middle class was also another class of people who were wealthy women married to a man who owned a business or a man who were factory owners. These women would have at least one servant in their household and their lives were ruled by proper etiquette. Middle class women could do jobs such as being a nurse or a teacher however in 1914 two new jobs telephonist and type writer were taken by women. These jobs had never been filled in by men so no pride was taken from the general male aura which seemed to dominate women’s lives at the time. But drawbacks such as being married pushed middle class women away from working entirely.
Finally the lower or working class which was the most common class of people in Britain.11% of all working class were domestic servants. This was a desired job because of the safe and warm working conditions. A domestic servant would work for a middle or upper class person and would work form 6.00am to 9.00pm for 2 pounds a week. A domestic servant would rarely see there family, in a year a servant would be allowed to see their family only 2 or 3 times a year. Other jobs for such as munitions, cotton farming, working in mills, shop assistants, working in textile factories and transport providers were all done by women. One extract from a book written in 1917 by a factory owner said “Typical cases which have come under my personnel observation show that women prefer factory life. They like the freedom, the spirit of independence fostered by their new-found earning power.” This showed that generically women were eager for more rights and responsibilities. The war gave women the opportunity to have the men’s jobs showing that women did have the strength and intelligence men at the time refused to believe they had.
