Co-written by Iggy Pop and David Bowie, the song is known for its Motown Shuffle drumbeat which opens the song. The rhythm was originally used in the song You Can't Hurry Love, written by the Holland-Dozier-Holland songwriting team and performed by The Supremes.
The guitar riff has been closely imitated by other songs such as Are You Gonna Be My Girl by Jet, Last Nite by The Strokes, PDA by Interpol, and The Sporting Life by The Decemberists. The main riff to the song itself bears a resemblance to Jeepster by T. Rex.

In 1996 the song gained increased popularity when it was used in the introduction of the film Trainspotting. It is also used as the theme song to the U.S. radio program The Jim Rome Show.
This song has been used in commercials for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, although the lyrics were heavily changed so that, for example, "with liquor and drugs" was replaced by "looks so fine."
It was also used in a music montage in an episode of The Drew Carey Show.
