[edit] Deviations from the novel

This list is not exhaustive, but intended to convey a sense of the differences between the film and the novel:

  • The setting is shifted to circa 1930.
  • Renfield is committed to the asylum by his sister, who has intercourse with an orderly.
  • Dracula does not "youthen."
  • The characters of Arthur Holmwood and Quincey Morris are omitted, as is the wreck of the Demeter.
  • Dr. Seward is Mina's uncle, not Lucy's suitor. Seward also has an incestuous relationship with his sister, who is victimized by Dracula.
  • Dracula does not have multiple coffins. He can only change into a bat, not a wolf.
  • Dracula must sleep by day.
  • Dracula is not killed. In the end he claims Mina as his Bride after killing Harker.
  • Two of Dracula's Brides show up, biting a hispanic maid and an asylum patient named Mary Jane.
  • Another new character, Dr. John Stoker, is bitten by the maid during sex, on his penis. Constrained in bed, he persuades Nurse Betty Lawson to undo one hand, whereupon he bites and rapes her.
  • Lucy has a lover, Dr. Peter Bradley. When he finds her in a coffin, he has sex with her.
  • Other than Mina, everyone bitten even once evidently becomes a vampire.
