Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

[edit] Character outline

Luppi is an attractive, youthful Espada with short black hair and a rather feminine face. He has three diamond-shaped markings above the left eyebrow, and what remains of his hollow mask (a top row of teeth) rests on the left side of his head. Although Luppi's gender is hard to determine at times, Rangiku Matsumoto clearly identifies him as a man. Luppi's attire consists of long sleeves that fall past his hands, obscuring them. His top also has cut-out portions that reveal the sides of his torso. The location of his hollow hole is hidden from view, but his Espada tattoo is prominently displayed on his right hip.

Luppi tends to be rather arrogant, insulting Grimmjow for his lowered rank and boasting constantly when in battle. In spite of this, he is a powerful combatant, able to hold of multiple opponents on his own during the third invasion of Karakura Town and seems to handle them easily. He and Gin Ichimaru also seem to have been on good terms, as Gin comments about being lonely after Luppi's death, citing the fact that the two often talked.

[edit] Synopsis

[edit] Arrancar arc

Luppi first appears briefly, observing the creation of a new arrancar, Wonderwice Margera. Afterwards, he travels to Karakura Town along with Grimmjow, Wonderwice, and Yammy to engage the shinigami there. Luppi introduces himself to Yumichika Ayasegawa and Ikkaku Madarame. He engages Yumichika in battle (Ikkaku declines to partake in an two-on-one fight), easily holding his own without releasing his zanpakutō. He claims that he could defeat Yumichika, Ikkaku, Tōshirō Hitsugaya, and Rangiku Matsumoto combined if he did.

In keeping with his statement, Luppi proceeds to release his zanpakutō and easily fends off all four shinigami, shattering Hitsugaya's final release and capturing the other three. Just as he is about to kill Matsumoto, Kisuke Urahara arrives and severs one of Luppi's tentacles. Further efforts to help are deterred by Yammy and Wonderwice. When Luppi turns his attention back to his captives, Hitsugaya reappears with his regenerated zanpakutō and freezes him within a mass of ice columns. Luppi survives the attack, albeit somewhat injured. Before Hitsugaya can finish him, Ulquiorra orders the group to retreat and Luppi is saved by a negación field. As he is being pulled away, Luppi swears that he will kill Hitsugaya the next time they meet.

[edit] Hueco Mundo arc

After returning to Hueco Mundo, Luppi is not happy with being used as a distraction to capture Orihime Inoue. Luppi is highly doubtful of Orihime's abilities, and believes she was not worth the effort. Aizen seems displeased with this attitude. As a demonstration, Aizen orders Orihime to restore Grimmjow's arm; she does so with ease, much to Luppi's surprise. Grimmjow has her restore his Espada tattoo along with it, then butchers Luppi to regain his rank, impaling Luppi on his newly-restored arm and then destroying his upper body with a cero blast.

[edit] Trepadora

Luppi's zanpakutō is Trepadora (蔦嬢, lit. Vine Girl, but Spanish for Rambling, as in an ivy or vine), a short blade resembling a kodachi or tantō that he wears close to the armpit. The sword's guard resembles a star with four elongated points. Trepadora is released with the command "strangle" (縊れ kubire?).

When Trepadora is released, eight tendrils sprout from a carapace mounted on Luppi's back. Luppi's mask also changes, growing into a makeshift helmet. Luppi can freely and independently control these tentacles to attack his opponents, making him skilled at group combat. The tentacles can also grow spikes to cause additional damage or rotate their positions on the carapace, allowing Luppi to spin them like helicopter blades. Unlike the release states of some other arrancar, Luppi's tentacles don't seem to be a part of his body, as he doesn't feel pain when they are injured and they do not bleed when cut.
