Lupita Jones (born María Guadalupe Jones Garay on September 6, 1968 in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico) became the first Mexican woman to win the title of Miss Universe.
[edit] Miss Universe 1991
Representing the state of Baja California, Jones won the title of Señorita Mexico (Miss Mexico) in September, 1990.
A few months later, on May 17, 1991 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, she and 72 contestants competed for the title of Miss Universe 1991.
She was the second Miss Universe in history to face two rounds of eliminations on finals night, after Mona Grudt in 1990. From a field of 73 contestants, the judges had to choose the Top 10 semifinalists, who would compete in Swimsuit, Interview and Evening Gown. Then 4 more delegates would be eliminated and the Top 6 finalists would answer questions from the judges. That would narrow things down to the final 3, who would answer the same final question.
She was the clear favorite from the beginning, with the Best Preliminary Overall Score and the Best Evening Gown Score before the final.
During the final telecast, Lupita won every competition: Swimsuit, Interview and Evening Gown, and proved she was determined to win the title after giving the best answers during the final round of questions. She was crowned Miss Universe 1991 in a virtually unanimous decision.
[edit] Life after Miss Universe
After finishing her reign in 1992, she founded a company named Promocertamen and, in 1994, created Nuestra Belleza Mexico, the Official Mexican Pageant responsible for choosing Mexico's representatives to Miss Universe and Miss World.
In 1999, she decided that the contest would support an important program for ill-treated girls in the country through the Integral Family Development project. In 2000, Jones accepted an appointment as UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador and Face to Face Campaign Spokesperson for Mexico.
Jones studied business administration and also did post-graduate studies in industrial administration at the Centro de Enseñanza Técnica y Superior in her native city of Mexicali, Baja California. She became a successful businesswoman.
