Location of Lukulu in Zambia

Lukulu is a market town in western Zambia, on the Zambezi River. Access to the town is limited to only a few unsealed roads which do not see much traffic. Fish from the river provide most of the local diet, and some are exported to other parts of Zambia away from the river.

The town is home to a pontoon across the Zambezi, with a beach lying on the opposite bank. Lukulu is also home to a hospital, two markets and several schools.

'It is a place of hope and amazent.Every year between December and March of the new year, the Zambezi River overflows and rises above the low banks of the flood plains. It is a small town that is largely isolated due to the rough terrain. It is the only problem which stops trade and tourists from reaching Lukulu. The roads there are so bad it takes hours, even days to just get in to the town centre.'
