Luke Varney (born September 28, 1982 in Leicester) is an English professional footballer. He is a forward and currently plays with Crewe Alexandra. He signed for Crewe Alexandra from Midland Football Alliance club Quorn F.C. in 2003 for £50,000, becoming the first ever player to command a fee at Quorn's level.[citation needed] Varney's deal also had a 20% sell-on clause with the South Cheshire club.[1]
He has played more than 80 games for the Alex.
During the 2006-07 season, Varney formed an excellent striker partnership with Nicky Maynard, the duo have scored, so far, 26 league goals.
On 26 October 2006 in the Carling Cup against Manchester United Varney scored to equalise for Crewe. Soon afterwards, Varney could have netted the winner but the United goalkeeper, Tomasz Kuszczak, saved his shot. Varney's goal forced the match into extra-time and Crewe were very close to settling the game by penalities had United's young striker Kieran Lee scored in the 119th minute.
After his impressive performance against United, Varney was linked with a variety of clubs, Portsmouth were reported to be the clun most likely to sign the Leicester born striker,[2] but Varney himself played down transfer talks.[3]
Following Crewe's 2-0 home victory against AFC Bournemouth, in which Varney scored the first goal, Crewe manager Dario Gradi said that Varney could become the club's next star striker, following the likes of David Platt, Rob Hulse and most recently Dean Ashton.[4]
Unfortunately for Varney, during Crewe's 1-1 home draw with Brighton, the 24-year old English striker suffered a broken toe, leaving him out for six weeks.[5]
