[edit] History
The decision was made in July 1994 to make the freight division of Lufthansa a limited stock company. It was the first airline in the world to split cargo and passenger operations in this way. The airline was founded on November 30, 1994 and started operations in 1995 [1]. Since 2001, the business has been split up into autonomous three units: "Global Cargo Net", "Global Cargo Handling Services" and "Global Freighter Operations". Meanwhile a reorganisation has taken place and the Sales and Handling activities have been combined under on management worldwide except Germany. There are three areas: The America's, Europe and Africa and Asia Pacific. Germany is still separated in Handling and Sales.[citation needed]
[edit] Services
The network covers 493 destinations on all 5 continents. Lufthansa Cargo is one of the leading freight airlines within the IATA ranking. In the year 2002, Lufthansa has flown 1.63 Million tons of freight and airmail. More than 5,000 employees do their best to ensure this performance.
To safeguard the leading position in the world market the company focuses on innovations. Thus, Lufthansa Cargo was the first airfreight enterprise that has reorganised all its products to meet time-definite requirements. The time-definite services are also available for special goods, such as perishables, animals, valuable goods or dangerous goods.
Lufthansa Cargo offers the possibility to make bookings via internet. The complete product range can be booked electronically with this, Lufthansa Cargo is once more in a leading position.
Within the strategic WOW Alliance, Lufthansa Cargo, Singapore Airlines Cargo, SAS Cargo and Japan Airlines Cargo have built an innovative and integrated airfreight system. WOW is the first airfreight alliance world-wide. The harmonised products within the alliance ensure the leading market position of Lufthansa Cargo and its partners.
