Lt. Shane Osborn (US Navy)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lt. Shane Osbourne was a pilot of a EP-3 Aries II turboprop that collided with a Chinese F-8 fighter jet above the South China Sea on April 1, 2001. He successfully landed the damaged plane on China's Hainan Island and all 24 crew members survived the collision, known as the Hainan Island incident. He and his crew were detained by Chinese authorities for eleven days until their release was negotiated through intense diplomatic efforts.[1]

He first showed an interest in flying at the age of 3, while growing up on a South Dakota farm a farmer took him for rides on a two-seat aircraft. He was raised by his mother in Norfolk, Nebraska and graduated in the top ten percent of his high school class. After graduation, he attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on a Naval ROTC scholarship.[2]
