Lt. Mudd

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lt. Mudd, a character in Joseph Heller's classic novel Catch-22, is the dead man in Yossarian's tent.

He was killed in action before signing in officially into the squadron, and so no one will take responsibility for the dead man's things. Yossarian complains to Sergeant Towser several times, who refuses to admit that the dead man existed and he therefore lives on in Yossarian's tent, despite all efforts to remove him.

When Yossarian's new "Roomies" solve this problem by simply throwing away the dead man's things, Yossarian panics, afraid that he can be disposed of just as easily.

It is believed that Lt. Mudd was killed on the mission where Milo was directing the flack anti-air defense on contract for the Germans, something that Yossarian later holds against Milo.
