Loyalton is a city in Sierra County, United States. The population was 862 at the 2000 census. The ZIP code for the community is 96118. Wired telephone numbers in the community follow the format (530) 993-xxxx. The town is near the north extent of California State Route 49, which ends at State Route 70 in Vinton, California. According to Rand-McNally, it is a fifty mile drive on State Route 49 to the county seat, Downieville. Many of the population are ranchers, loggers, former loggers, or suburbanites escaping from the growing Reno-Tahoe area.

Loyalton is located at 39°40′36″N, 120°14′35″W (39.676558, -120.243157)GR1. Elevation above mean sea level for the area was listed as roughly 4,930 feet.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 862 people, 323 households, and 235 families residing in the city. The population density was 978.9/km² (2,516.4/mi²). There were 347 housing units at an average density of 394.1/km² (1,013.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.90% White, 0.23% African American, 2.67% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.58% from other races, and 1.51% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.19% of the population.

There were 323 households out of which 38.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 23.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $34,063, and the median income for a family was $39,750. Males had a median income of $38,864 versus $23,571 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,732. About 20.3% of families and 18.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.0% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.

  • Because Loyalton is Sierra County's most populous municipality and its only incorporated city, generally half of the meetings of the county's board of supervisors are held in Downieville (the county seat) and the other half are held in Loyalton. [1]
