[edit] Already Cleared

I have been a member of the Myst Community for some time now, and all information that has been posted from other sites, I have recieved clearance from those site owners. Do I need to include a copyright with each page for information carried from those sites? (Sorry if I do need to. Still new. I thought their permission alone would be enough. Will change post-haste if that is the case).

You need to tell us the source of each item you copy, the original author, the author's permission to release it under GFDL, and the understanding that it can and will be edited unmercilessly. RickK 05:44, Jun 27, 2004 (UTC)

Hi Lovanion.. I gather that a lot of that Myst content is copyrighted to Cyan Worlds Inc. (although it is on other websites such as dnidesk.com and dpwr.net).. do you have their permission to release it under the GFDL? Not just their permission to "put it on a website"? If you do, what would probably be best is if you put a note to that effect on the talk page of each page which is derived from their copyrighted content.. otherwise another keen-eyed editor will come along a month down the track and say "hey, that looks like a copyright violation!" —Stormie 07:36, Jun 27, 2004 (UTC)

Lovanion, can you please address this issue before you add any more Myst pages. Has Cyan Worlds Inc. granted permission for their content to be released under the GFDL or not? —Stormie 03:13, Jun 28, 2004 (UTC)
I'm really sorry about that RickK and Stormie. I have deleted the content from the following:

"D'ni Kings" "D'ni Guilds" "D'ni Objects & Devices"

I don't however, know how to delete the page itself, and was wondering if one of you could do that. I have written to Rand Miller, CEO of Cyan Worlds Inc., to gain permission, and until I recieve a reply, was just going to clear everything I posted that used anything questionable in reference to a Cyan Worlds Copyright.

Once again, I am extremely sorry for any inconvenience I have caused you guys. Please except my apology in this extremely embarrasing situation I have found myself in. -- Lovanion 11:16, Jun 28, 2004 (UTC)

Hi, 1) only administrators can delete pages (I believe there's exceptions to this, such as user pages). You should, instead, shorten the pages to content that you wrote on your own (such as a basic description of the topic), and add a stub note ('{{ stub }}' without the spaces). As time passes on, I'm sure others will fill it. 2) As a maintainer of many Myst web sites out there, I can assure you that the main concern of Cyan Worlds regarding copyrights is that their genuine creations, or parts of them, do not get claimed by the competition. Cyan hosts a special form to request legal privileges for their assets here: http://www.cyan.com/?page=legal . Asking them for permission to use their assets (texts, screenshots, concepts, whatever) on Wikipedia won't be an issue (however, you should technically have contacted Chris Brandkamp instead of Rand Miller, but don't worry about that). Putting them under GFDL will. I strongly with RickK's assessment that all content must be under GFDL; instead, most franchise-related articles on Wikipedia are "fair use" items, really, which is a "license" incompatible to the GFDL. If that truly was a requirement, all of Wikipedia's information related to Myst, StarTrek, most Hollywood movies out there, etc. would have to be removed (and not just from the current versions of the pages), thus deceiving the purpose of the encyclopedia we are trying to build here.
So, instead, ask Chris if you may use assets in a non-promoting way on Wikipedia, and if the fact that anyone is free to edit the articles is an issue to him. -- Chucker 11:37, 2004 Jun 28 (UTC)

[edit] Well met

Hey, good to ‘meet’ you :)

Languages are a passion of mine: it is the richness of the D’niverse which has largely kept me with the Myst franchise over the years. Very nice contributions, I am very pleased to see a filling in of the D’ni topics here! Anárion 17:16, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Ages

I propose a change in how we do the articles on the D'ni ages, please see Talk:D'ni_ages. Cheers Anárion 09:11, 30 Jun 2004 (UTC)
