[edit] Release information

An early demo of "Love Machine" was included on the Popjustice compilation album Popjustice: 100% Solid Pop Music; this version was sung by Cheryl Cole and Nadine Coyle and features radically different lyrics from the released versions, even excluding the phrase "Love Machine".

The group tried to stop the single being released as they thought the beginning of the song would irritate people. It has since become one of their favourite singles to perform.

Upon its release, "Love Machine" was nominated for 'Record of The Year 2004'[citation needed] and sold in excess of 96,000 copies, 35,800 in the first week of release. The B-side, "Androgynous Girls", has become popular amongst fans of the group.

[edit] Covers

The song was famously covered by the Arctic Monkeys on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge. The band have since found the hit has become a favourite of their fans who "chant for 'Love Machine'"; now they "[shrug] off requests with an effortlessly breezy 'not a chance'".[1] However their earlier responses to these requests had caused controversy, lead singer Alex Turner telling fans at the Sheffield Octagon:

Is that all you like us for? Fuck off, we can’t remember how to play it.[2]

The song has also been covered by singer Tiffany and on Comic Relief does Fame Academy by Blue Peter presenter Zoe Salmon.

The video for "Love Machine" takes place in the fictitious Eskimo Club, a nightclub which the band members, dressed for a night on the town, enter.

Though Cheryl initially sets her eye on a musician at the club, the girls make their way to a table.

However, they are soon distracted by the men in the Eskimo Club and the tricks they pull to try to get the girls' attention.

In a separate setting of a dark background and flashing lights, the girls begin to dance, and eventually they release their inhibitions and begin dancing in the Eskimo Club as well.
