"The Missing Frame" (2007) |
"Love Like Winter" is the sixth track on AFI's album Decemberunderground, released in 2006. It is also the second single for the album, following "Miss Murder". The music video for the single was directed by Marc Webb, who also directed the videos for AFI's "The Days of the Phoenix", "The Leaving Song Pt. 2" and "Miss Murder". The band members refused to discuss the video until its release, as they wished to surprise their most diehard fans.[3] Unlike its predecessor, the video for the single reached the #1 spot on TRL.

[edit] Synopsis
The video starts by showing the band in a snowy forest setting. They slowly walk through the dark forest, slowly stumbling and growing further apart, implying they grow apart from each other. As guitarist Jade Puget stumbles, lead singer Davey Havok wakes up in a small mound of snow. A cloaked woman appears, seeming to have some kind of relationship with Havok. Through the video, Havok follows the hooded woman into what appears to be a snowy clearing in the forest. It ends with the cloaked woman taking off her hood, revealing eyes which are black and unfriendly, literally blowing Havok away. Then he falls through the ice into a lake. He tries to escape, but the water above refreezes, sealing him underwater. He then mouths words. Havok is drowning when the woman appears underwater and grabs him, turns him around, and holds him. The video then shows Havok from an overhead angle and he is sinking. Although many say that the woman is then gone, this is just a trick of the camera angle. The woman, who is in fact "The beautiful embodiment of hopelessness" according to Havok, is still there, her face opposite Havok's.
[edit] Development
The video was inspired by Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill duology and Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow.[3]
In mid-September 2006, the song appeared on the band's MySpace page, along with promotional photos from the then-unreleased video.
On September 26, AFI was in the TRL studio at 3:30 EST on MTV to debut the video. On December 11 the video retired at the #7 position on TRL only spending 40 days on the countdown; making it the first video to spend the least amount of time on the TRL countdown.
On November 15, 2006, a "Long Version" of the video was released on Yahoo!. The video contains approximately one minute of additional footage inserted at the beginning of the video depicting the concluding portion of the preceding song on Decemberunderground, "The Interview". This portion of the video shows the band members as well as the hooded woman, as well as the "water underground" mentioned in the closing lines of the song. During this new portion of the video, there are five quick flashes. The first four are frames from four short videos AFI made during their 5 flowers mystery that ended with people getting passes to "secret shows" in April 2006. The fifth frame is something new. It has the word ÞrírÞrírSjö over the cover of the 7" single of the single from Sing the Sorrow, "The Leaving Song Pt. 2". ÞrírÞrírSjö is Icelandic for "three three seven." Around midnight PST on November 17, 2006, the extended version of the video was removed from Yahoo!. However, the long version can still be seen on YouYube.
This song was also produced by Ronan Harris of VNV Nation.

[edit] Trivia
- Near the end, after the blizzard, the protagonist (Havok) catches sight of a pair of arms, frozen in place. These arms belong to Smith Puget (AFI's tour manager), brother to AFI's guitarist, Jade Puget. Though in the context of the video, it appears that the pair of frozen arms belong to Jade himself.
- The girl in the video is named Christina Petrovic.
- "Por Siempre" means "Forever", or "For Always" in Spanish.
- There is a popular piano version of the song made by a piano artist known as "The Pianocian" on YouTube.
- Evanescence's "Lithium" music video bears a striking resemblance to the video of "Love Like Winter". The latter was shot and released two months previously.
- After some internet rumors that Apoptygma Berzerk will be remixing the song, it was discovered that VNV Nation will in fact be remixing the song. They previously remixed "Miss Murder".
- On January 21, 2007, AFI performed this song on Saturday Night Live, along with their previous single, "Miss Murder". The soundboard crashed before the band took the stage for "Miss Murder", resulting in intermittently muted vocals.
- This song, along with another song on the Decemberunderground, 37mm, were both originally supposed to be songs for Davey and Jade's side project, Blaqk Audio.
