Lough Ennell is a lake near the town of Mullingar - the county town of Westmeath in Ireland.
Measuring about 11 kilometers in length and 3 to 4 kilometers wide, Lough Ennell is a shallow lake renowned for trout fishing. It holds the record for the largest brown trout caught in Ireland (11.5 kilograms).
The main river flowing into Lough Ennell is the River Brosna, which enters on the Mullingar side of the lake and exits on the opposite side at Lilliput. Lilliput in Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift is named after this townland.
There is presently (August 2006) a controversy regarding the use of jet skis and speed boats on the lake. There is major opposition to their use by local anglers and others who use the lake for recreation. Westmeath County Council are trying to introduce legislation to address the issue, but it may be sometime before anything happens.
