The Lou Marsh Trophy (first awarded in 1936) is awarded annually by a panel of journalists in recognition of Canada's top athlete, professional or amateur. Each year the vote takes place in December. The award is named in honour of Lou Marsh, a prominent Canadian athlete, referee, and sports writer. The trophy was donated by Charles Ring.
