Lothian Buses
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lothian Buses is the largest provider of bus services in the city of Edinburgh, Scotland. It also serves parts of East Lothian and Midlothian. Lothian Buses is the only publicly owned bus company in Scotland, 91% owned by the City of Edinburgh council, and the remainder by the councils in East Lothian, Midlothian, and West Lothian.

[edit] History
Edinburgh Corporation Transport was renamed Lothian Regional Transport in 1975 during local government re-organisation. In 1986, it became Lothian Region Transport plc before changing its name to Lothian Buses plc on 6 January 2000.
Lothian buses operates a flat-fare system. Adult singles for all journeys cost £1.00, although child fares, day tickets and 'Ridacards' are also available, with senior citizens traveling free, in line with the rest of Scotland. Payment is placed in a slot, which automatically dumps into a hopper that the driver has no access to, and change is not given, increasing security and allowing passengers to board more quickly.
[edit] Fleet
The current standard vehicles are:
- Single-deck - Dennis Dart SLF/Plaxton Pointer, Volvo B7RLE/Wright Eclipse Urban.
- Double-deck - Leyland Olympian/Alexander R-type, Volvo Olympian/Alexander R-type and Royale, Dennis Trident/Plaxton President, Volvo B7TL/Wright Eclipse Gemini.
Other, not so numerous vehicles include conventional Dennis Darts with Alexander Dash bodies, a batch of Alexander ALX400-bodied Tridents and most recently some Polish-built Scania OmniCity double deckers for service 100.
Past standard double-decker vehicles include hundreds of Leyland Titan PD2/MCCW, and then hundreds of Leyland Atlantean/Alexander.
Since 2001, Lothian Buses has purchased single door vehicles only, when previous double-decker vehicles had had separate entrances and exits. The change was made for safety reasons. Previous generations of purchases had long been dual door - Alexander-bodied Atlanteans, Leyland/Volvo Olympians, then the early Dennis Tridents, bodied by both Plaxton and Alexander.
Currently being delivered new, are 75 Volvo B7TL/Wright double deckers and 10 similar single deckers. For 2007 delivery there will be 50 Volvo B9TL/Wright double deckers, 5 similar single deckers, and also a further 10 Scania OmniCity double-deckers for the Airlink, which will replace all of the remaining Tridents on this service. The Volvo B9TL double deckers will all be allocated to Central garage, displacing older Olympians to Longstone and Marine. As a result, Central will be the first Lothian Buses garage to have a hundred per cent low-floor allocation.
[edit] Liveries
Traditional "Madder" and White has been a LRT and Lothian Buses tradition for many a year. Coach-seated Leyland Olympian/Alexander RH-types and Volvo Olympian/Alexander Royales have been painted in the same scheme, but with a brighter maroon in place of the madder. These vehicles are not branded for, but are typically found only on, routes 15/15A.
In 1999/2000, coinciding perhaps with the dropping of "LRT - Lothian Regional Transport" in favour of "Lothian Buses" as a trading name, the company set off in a new direction with regard to livery. A new livery for low floor vehicles, of all-over white, with madder lower skirting. Gold and madder diamonds were then added to the rear quarters and the rear of the vehicle.
The new low floor livery has become standard on all new vehicles since, seen on all Lothian's SPDs, Tridents and Volvo single and double deckers from the B7x range. Interestingly it has not been applied to any older vehicles in the fleet, with the most recent purchases before the introduction of the livery - a batch of Royale-bodied Volvo Olympians - remaining in the traditional colours.
Within the low floor scheme there are notable differences. Route 22/N22 branding (in madder) is applied to the colours on B7RLE/Wrights dedicated to that service due to their Guided Busway capabilities. Route 30 branding (in orange) is found on various SPDs dedicated in the main to this route. SPDs dedicated to route X48 Ingliston Park and Ride have route branding, and the madder on the skirting is replaced by green. The roofline is also in green on these vehicles.
Other branded routes using the low floor scheme are on the "card" routes: 3/3A "Club Class" (extra yellow on the uppers/roofline) 26 "East to west through the heart of the city" (gold on uppers/roofline) and 44 "Service with Sparkle" (black on uppers/roofline). From 3 November 2006, the final suit in the playing cards theme made its debut with the first of the route 31 branded vehicles taking to the road. These have orange uppers and rooflines, and are branded "Ace of Spades - cutting across the city and Midlothian".
So far, several buses have been repainted, on the 35 route with the name of "Airport-Holyrood-Executive link" in a purple circle. There is the route description above that, similar to the 22 and 30. It is unknown if all buses that serve the 35 will eventually be repainted, or if only a small selection will be.
Vehicles for routes 37,47 and X47 (Also using the low floor scheme), between Edinburgh and Penicuik, are branded as "Penicuik City Link" with blue uppers and roofline. These buses made their first appearance on 21 December 2006.
Airlink 100 is run separately from the Lothian network, in the sense that it has its own dedicated fleet of vehicles, and its own unique livery of two-tone blue with Orange Branding.
