Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Chai Lam meets Mr Worm by accident, and through his business of lost-and-found, be it looking for lost wallets in the garbage bin or searching for missing people, when he touched her heart. Along the way to her shipping business magnate father's office, she had to run up the stairs to the 22nd level, but because of leg cramps she had to take a break, and gets to know Scottish seaman Ted. She loses a shoe by accident, and Ted goes down the stairs to retrieve it but leaves with it when he sees that she's gone by the time he came back up. She makes several attempts to get to know more about Ted's homeland, and embarrassingly gets help from Ted when she didn't want him to know, all because of a colleague who figured that Ted was the man who actually was from Scotland. From the talk with Ted, Lam learns of the solemn side of going back to the Edge of the World, which is either to bury a dead person, or bring someone back to be buried. She tries to find out more, but Ted had suddenly disappeared from a ship that belongs to Lam's father. She then engages Mr Worm's help to hunt for Ted, but by the time she gets him, he was on the brink of leaving back for home, to bury his grandfather.

Due to her worsening condition of leukemia and her growing curiosity in Ted, she flies over to Scotland to look at the legendary Edge of the World and has a brief revival of what seems like a romance with Ted. That fell through because she would have liked to have a baby girl before she dies; while Ted would have liked to have a baby boy instead. After viewing the cold front coming in from the ocean meeting the warm front, Ted reveals that Mr Worm found his way to look for her, accomplishing his personal lost-and-found mission - to look for Chai Lam.

Years later, after dying some time after having a baby, her spirit realizes that the secret that she felt nobody was letting her in on, was that there isn't such a thing as a magician who can turn lives around, but the smallest and unlikeliest of things can be of magical value in life.

Spoilers end here.
