Los Zetas are an extremely powerful criminal organization who works for the Gulf Cartel. were rumored to be ex-Army Special forces, regular troopers, police agents and common criminals who worked for Osiel Cardenas in the drug trafficking business. Some were said to have received special-forces training under the U.S. Army at the School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Georgia [1]. The members with military backgrounds can be considered mercenaries working for Mexican drug cartels. The name Zeta comes from a radio code used by the Mexican federal police to locate high-ranking battalion commanders. The actual truth behind the legend of "Los Zetas" can be attributed to unsubstantiated reporting and tabloid journalism.

In the early 1990's, in effort to aid the Mexican government with its struggle battling the violent drug cartels of Northern Mexico, US Army Special forces trained a number of Mexican federal agents and Army battalions in discretionary warfare.
