Los Conquistadores is first and foremost the name of a professional wrestling tag team in the World Wrestling Federation, the team consisted of two masked wrestlers known as 1 or Uno and 2 or Dos. The original team consisted of Jose Luis Rivera and Jose Estrada Sr. while several other wrestlers have appeared under the golden masks in 2000 and 2003. The original costume was golden spandex bodysuits and golden masks but later teams have varied it to blue and gold Japanese style wrestling masks and elaborate shoulder pads while still using the name.

[edit] History

One name, one team – many performers is the best way to sum up Los Conquistadors although for almost a decade it looked like the “Legacy” of Los Conquistadors was their run in the WWF from 1987 to 1989 until the gimmick was reviewed in 2000.

[edit] The originals

The original Conquistadors were a masked team consisting of José Luis Rivera and José Estrada (Sr.) two Puerto Rican wrestlers (but billed as Mexican wrestlers) who was used mainly to make other teams look good in the ring. The golden full body suits and masks meant that the two were immediate attention grabbers but as the losses piled up it became clear that they were not destined for greatness. The Conquistadors won so few matches that it was always considered an upset even if when they beat mid-card teams such as The Killer Bees or the Rockers or even when they beat fellow “jobber team” the Young Stallions.

The only PPV appearance of the Conquistadors is also the sole highlight of their time in the WWF. They took part in a 10 team (20 man) elimination match at the Survivor Series 1988. The team was the last team left on their side but were only bit players in the double turn of the Powers of Pain (who won the match) and Demolition. The team spent the rest of 1988 and 1989 losing to established teams left and right, except for a surprising victory over The Fabulous Rougeaus on their home turf of Canada. During 1989 Conquistador #1 (Rivera) started to appear on his own as “The Conquistador” while #2 (Estrada) only appeared sporadically before both maked men left the federation.

[edit] 2000 Revival

During 2000 the Hardy Boyz and Edge and Christian had been feuding for a long time having competed in the first ever Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match (TLC) match and the Hardy Boyz finally capturing the WWF World Tag Team titles in a Steel Cage match at Unforgiven 2000. After the Steel Cage Commissioner Mick Foley declared that Edge and Christian would get no more shots at the Hardy Boyz, it was time for someone else to challenge for the gold.

When Los Conquistadors made their “shocking return” the following week people noticed that they did not physically look like Rivera and Estrada Sr. in fact they looked and acted more like Edge and Christian, a suspicion that was boosted by Los Conquistadors immediately targeting the Hardy Boyz in the hopes of getting a shot at the titles. On the October 16, 2000 Monday Night Raw they beat the Dudley Boyz and a few days later they won a tag-team battle royal on Thursday Night Smackdown to earn a title shot. After the match Los Conquistadors were congratulated backstage by Edge and Christian, a very sweaty, out of breath Edge and Christian. But since they were seen with Los Conquistadors, Edge and Christian claimed that there was no way in the world they could be Los Conquistadors like people suspected.

Los Conquistadors had earned a titles shot at No Mercy 2000 and beat Matt and Jeff Hardy using tactics similar to those employed by Edge and Christian. Backstage Edge and Christian (who looked like they just came out of the showers) politely challenged Los Conquistadors for a title shot the next night, going so far as to offering to make it a 2 on 1 handicap match. Come Raw, Edge look supremely confident as he makes his way to the ring, but is shocked when Los Conquistadors put up a fight against the challenger and they quickly beat Edge to defend the titles. When Christian showed up at ringside Los Conquistadors unmasked revealing themselves to be Matt and Jeff Hardy. They explained that they attacked Edge & Christian’s hired goons backstage (the “Hired goons” were Christopher Daniels and Aaron Aguilera who had doubled for Los Conquistadors in backstage segments).

When Edge and Christian complained Commissioner Mick Foley came out and made the decision that since Los Conquistadors were the tag-team champions and Matt and Jeff had just been revealed as Los Conquistadors – Matt and Jeff Hardy were the tag-team champions. After being outsmarted by the Hardy Boys, Edge and Christian gave up the golden costumes of Los Conquistadors.

[edit] 2003

On the July 17, 2003 edition of SmackDown! Rob Conway and Nick Dinsmore assumed the roles of Los Conquistadors in a match where they were beaten by Rey Mysterio & Billy Kidman. Unlike previous versions of Los Conquistadores, Conway and Dinsmore wore blue and gold masks with exposed mouths, similar to the mask of Ultimo Dragon, along with blue shoulder pads straying from the traditional golden spandex outfits.

On July 27, 2003 another set of Conquistadors participated in the APA Invitational Barroom Brawl Match at the Vengeance, pay per view where both were resoundedly beaten up by the APA. In those case the men under the masks were Rob Conway and Johnny Jeter who were both working in Ohio Valley Wrestling at the time.
