[edit] Biography
[edit] Early Career
Lori Yates began singing and songwriting at age 19 in the punk/new wave band "The Last Resorts". They played legendary Toronto clubs The Turning Point and Larry's Hideaway. A career highlight was opening for Teenage Head.
Yates then formed the band Rang Tango and released the independent album Rang Tango in 1987. They are considered a pioneer of alternative country/cowpunk in Canada who came from the burgeoning Queen West music scene of the mid-1980's that gave birth to contemporaries Blue Rodeo, Cowboy Junkies, and Handsome Ned.
[edit] Nashville
Yates was signed to Sony Nashville and her debut album Can't Stop the Girl was released worldwide in 1989. She was nominated for a Juno Award in 1990 as Best Female Country Vocalist. She was also nominated for a CCMA Award. She toured with the likes of Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earle, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Big Sugar and wrote with renowned Nashville songwriters Don Schiltz, Guy Clark, Matraca Berg and Wendy Waldman.
Yates recorded the duet "Brother To Brother" with Gregg Allman that was included on his album No Stranger to the Dark: The Best of Gregg Allman and on the soundtrack to the Patrick Swayze film "Next Of Kin".
She later signed with Virgin Music Canada and released her second album Breaking Point in 1994, a collection of roots, rock and soul. Rick Danko (The Band) and Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo) appeared as guest vocalists. She later toured with Blue Rodeo, Jann Arden, Colin James and Faith Hill. In 1996, Yates released her second Virgin Music Canada album Untogether.
