Lori-Ann Martino
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lori-Ann Martino is a politician of the Canadian provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador. On July 28, 2004, she ran for the Canadian House of Commons, representing the Green Party of Canada in Labrador, but lost to Lawrence O'Brien of the Liberal Party of Canada. Martino received 178 votes to O'Brien's 5,524.
Lori-Ann Martino was an organizer for the Green Party of Canada in Newfoundland and Labrador; she was its elected president and organized seven candidates for Newfoundland and Labrador for the 2004 General Election. She also served as Jason Crummey's registered agent during the 2005 Labrador by-election.
During the 2005-6 General Election, Lori-Ann Martino abruptly resigned from the Green Party, in the middle of the election campaign. Martino resigned from the Green Party of Canada because she disagreed with Jim Harris' opposition to a sustainable seal fishery in Atlantic Canada.
When Lori-Ann Martino resigned, Sharon Slabchuck (a resident of Prince Edward Island) was hired as an employee of the Green Party of Canada to organize Newfoundland and Labrador. Of the seven federal candidates in the 2006 election, five of them were parachute-candidates, the majority being residents in Prince Edward Island. Two Newfoundland residents who were endorsed as candidates were Stephen Eli Harris (St. John's East) and Shannon Hillier (Avalon).
