Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground is a book by Michael Moynihan & Didrik Søderlind. It gives the history of black metal music.
The book contains interviews with most of the prominent surviving members of the Norwegian black metal scene, including Samoth, a Church burner and Varg Vikernes, who murdered Mayhem guitarist Euronymous. It attempts to explain the mentality of the early Norwegian scene while attempting to look at other cases from across the world
A common criticism of the book has been that it ignores/makes light of the gravity of the right-wing and racist leanings of its subjects. One of the major criticisms of the book from inside the black metal scene is the focus on Varg Vikernes, as his extremist views are not considered representative[citation needed].
