Lord Nelson elementary was founded in the 1950's, and many of its early students were of Italian descent, as this is a large ethnic group in the hastings-sunrise area. Now, however, almost 60% of enrolled students are of Asian descent.

Currently, there is a MACC Program in Lord Nelson Elementary, and is taught by teachers Ms. Tricia Stec and Mme. Sylvie Lanmark-Kaye. As of 2007, there are 17 members of the class, some of which have skipped grades. There are also English Second Language and TM programs, as well as an Autistic Educational facility.
