Template talk:Lopbn L3 by cores

[edit] Ultimate Specs

  1. One of several templates that will, among them, cover virtually all cases of
    template:List of people Xxx Links
where Xxx is an upper-case letter possibly followed by 1 or more lower case letters. Each such "Links" Tl consists of two to 28 links to main-space LoPbN pages, with targets of three kinds:
    1. Zero to two of the form
      List of people Ttt Xxx
where the Xxx is the same as in the Links Tl's title, the Ttt(s)may be "Name", "Prefix", or "Name/Prefix", and all the links of the other two kinds follow them.
    2. At least one of the form
      List of people XxxL
where the Xxx is as before and L represents a lower-case letter
    3. Up to nine of the form
      List of people XxxL-XxxM
where L and M each represent a letter, L precedes M in the alphabet, .
  2. This planned version of this template will serve for any valid such set of lks (in theory -- another template will better serve in some cases) for which any pair of #3-type lks are separated from each other by at least one #2-type lk. That is, no cases where two #2-type lks are adjacent are suitable to this template.

[edit] Development Chronology

  1. Two working versions (20 minutes apart), with the unintended difference between them not IMO worth discussing. Both are limited to cases of one #2-type link flanked by, at least on one side, a #3-type. Further, the #2-type's lower-case letter represented by L above must be in the range c-x: a, b, y, and z are not provided for in this version.

  2. Version of ~07:00 today
changes user interface for controlling the "head" of the row of links
enables the portion of the "head" interface for directing putting "people named" and "prefixed" entries on a single page
delegates the mechanics of handling the final lk (e.g. knowledge that it ends with "z") down a level.
The third point is part of making it convenient to upgrade the number of "cores" handled step by step.

  3. Version of ~05:00 today correctly upgrades the template to handle either one or two "cores", as long as they are separated and straddled by range-named pages.
