Talk:London Olympics

[edit] Name

The current article name is London Olympics. I'm considering changing it to one of the following:

  • British Olympics
  • Olympic Games hosted by the United Kingdom
  • Olympic Games in the United Kingdom

The first is a slight change and could incorporate details about the failed Manchester and Birmingham bids. The second could be more in line with other possible articles (Olympic Games hosted by France, for example). The last could incorporate details about British competitors and public reactions to the Games along with the content of the other two suggestions. All of these would detract from this article being details of the London games, but would allow for a wider content. Any input would be good. violet/riga (t) 00:17, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Olympic Games hosted by the United Kingdom would be the best. London/British Olympics makes it sound like an entirely different set of Olympics. ShadowMan1od 05:20, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

I disagree with this proposal. I think the page currently acts well as halfway between a disambiguation page and an article. However, without its use as a disambiguation page, I don't think this aritcle would really warrent inclusion, as all the stuff is developed on the individual games' pages. Also, given that the Olympics is held by a city, not a country, any title inclduing British or United Kingdom would be factually incorrect Robdurbar 14:37, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

The way that a country reacts to the Olympic Games could be quite interesting. Do the British people like the Olympics or don't care about it at all? How has public reaction changed since we won the bid? I think the final suggestion has some great potential, not duplicating the individual Olympic articles any more than this one and including a wealth of other information. It could also link up to the British Olympic performance articles. violet/riga (t) 14:59, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] 1908 Olymics - 4th or 5th?

The text refers to '(the Games of the IV Olympiad) were the fifth modern Olympic Games' - does anyone know why the fifth games were called the IV Olympiad - or is there a mistake? Thanks! Petesmiles 03:25, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

The discrepancy is due to the 1906 Summer Olympics, which were added between the 1904 Summer Olympics (Games of the III Olympiad) and the 1908 Summer Olympics (Games of the IV Olympiad). The International Olympic Committee does not recognize the 1906 Games as official Games, but many sources do count them (noting that they were sanctioned by the IOC at the time and, perhaps most importantly, did actually take place).
  1. 1896 Summer Olympics - Games of the I Olympiad
  2. 1900 Summer Olympics - Games of the II Olympiad
  3. 1904 Summer Olympics - Games of the III Olympiad
  4. 1906 Summer Olympics - not a 4-year Olympiad
  5. 1908 Summer Olympics - Games of the IV Olympiad
