Long Bet Project

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Long Bet Project was created by the Long Now Foundation to propose and keep track of bets on long-term events and stimulate discussion about the future. One example bet would be on whether people will regularly fly on pilotless airplanes by 2030. Each bet has experts arguing on the pro and con sides of the bet.

The bets are actual money bets of varying sizes. However, the proceeds go to a charity selected by the winner (with half the interest on the bet sums going to the Long Now Foundation as fee). Thus, the site does not count as a gambling enterprise, which might have resulted in legal complications. The bet amounts are paid upfront and deposited into a conservative and long-term investment fund (the Farsight Fund portfolio) managed by Capital Group.
