[edit] History
The route 289 began in June 1968. The 289 was routed from Thornton Heath garage to the Addiscombe Black Horse Pub, this route on ran Monday to Friday, which was operated by RT's. In 1970 the route started a Saturday service which partly replaced the withdrawn section of the 50, as the route coasted a lot of money to run with double deckers they decided to put SMS on the route which were single deck buses (M-F 4 SMS) and S (3 SMS)
During 1973 the route was extended from the Addiscombe Black Horse to Elmers End Green. The amount of buses used on the route was upgraded from 4 SMS to 5 SMS Monday to Friday and 3 SMS to 4 SMS Saturday.
In 1978 the route was extended to Beckenham Junction and the route operation was transferred to Elmers End Bus Garage. Later on that year the SMS buses were replaced by LS. The bus frequency was also went up to 7LS Monday to Saturday, due to the amount of people which were using the route.
When 1981 came the route was extended to Purley, Monday to Friday except evenings, so the evening and Saturday buses stopped at Croydon Airport. In 1985 the route was cut back from Beckenham Junction to Elmers End Green. A year later the operating garage was changed to TC South Croydon, and cut down the Saturday buses by 2 LS.
In early 1987 London Transport didn't want the route anymore so London and Country took over so the nearest operating garage was Chelsham Garage (CM). London and Country pushed for the 289 to be full time going to Purley, and they finally got the permission to do so 4 years later in 1991.
In 1993 there was a timetable change which had a Sunday journey on it from Purley Way to West Croydon but this only ran in the afternoons. A year later in 1994 they decided to give the 289 a daily service from CN. In 1995 London Links started to operate the route from CN.
In and around 1999 Arriva London took the route from London Links. A few years later the 289 was allocated new long Dennis Darts (PDL) so wheelchair users could go on the buses easily. Today the route is still operated by Arriva London, and still have 7 left of the 10 PDL darts that they brought for the route. Now days you may find the odd double decker on the route. Usually there are 3 Dennis/Wright buses (DWL or DW) on route and 7 long Dennis Darts (PDL). The frequency for Monday to Saturday is every 12-15 minutes and Evening and Sunday's buses run every 20-30 minutes. The route usually takes between 40 and 65 minutes. The route is now operated by CN Beddington Farm Garage.
