Lon Non

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lon Non was a Cambodian politician and brother of Prime Minister Lon Nol. He served in the National Assembly of Cambodia and supported his brother Lon Nol and Prince Sisowath Sirik Matak in deposing Norodom Sihanouk as head of state. His other brother Lon Nil was also a supporter and was captured by villagers that supported Norodom Sihanouk and was killed.

Lon Non refused to leave Cambodia under the request of the United States government and worked along with Long Boret, and Prince Sisowath Sirik Matak under a cease fire agreement to end the fighting with the Khmer Rouge. Lon Non did this in spite of his name being on a death list broadcast by Norodom Sihanouk of those who would be subject to summary execution after a Khmer Rouge victory. They remained in office until the Khmer Rouge captured Phnom Penh on April 17, 1975. He was detained at the Information Ministry.

Soon after, Koy Thuon, a Khmer Rouge deputy front commander organized the Committee for Wiping Out Enemies at the Hotel Monorom. Its first action was ordering the immediate execution of Lon Non and other leading government figures. He was executed on the grounds of the Cercle Sportif in Phnom Penh.
