Biased? Just a lot.
Lois Brown is a Canadian businesswoman and presumptive politician. She is a former member of the Canadian Alliance Party having been its nominated candidate prior to the merger with the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada.
She sought the nomination of the Conservative Party of Canada in the riding of Newmarket—Aurora for the 2004 federal election, but lost to Belinda Stronach by a vote of 512-412. She gained the Conservative nomination for the riding in time for the 2006 election after Stronach crossed the floor to the Liberal Party of Canada. However, she was defeated by Stronach in the election by a margin of approximately 4000 votes and is considered a target riding of the Conservative Party. Brown, chosen to be the 2007 Conservative candidate in Newmarket—Aurora again, will rematch Stronach in the upcoming federal election, which could be called at anytime.
At the March 2005 national convention of the Conservative Party of Canada, Brown was elected as a member of the National Council for the party.
Lois’ roots run deep in Newmarket-Aurora.
Lois attended Dr. G.W. Williams High School in Aurora before obtaining her ARCT (Associate of The Royal Conservatory of Music) at the University of Toronto.
She has lived in Newmarket for the last 26 years. Lois is proud to call this community home and knows that the success of Newmarket-Aurora is entirely due to the great people who live here. Lois has gladly spent the last 26 years giving back to a community that has given so much to her and her family.
Lois has a long history of volunteerism in the community.
She helped found the Mothers of Preschoolers Program in Newmarket and volunteered as a host family for AFS Interculture Canada, each year welcoming a high school student from Europe into their home and into the community. Lois is an accompanist for the York Region Police Chorus, which raises money for local charities by presenting concerts across Ontario, and internationally.
Lois loves to jump in and give a hand at as many community and charity events as she can - whether it’s flipping burgers, manning a station or cleaning up. Lois is a community problem-solver and is often turned to in times of need, whether it’s a personal matter or one involving government.
Having grown up debating politics at the dinner table, it is perhaps no surprise that Lois’ passion for people and for service have intersected in the political arena. During her university years, Lois resolved that her political philosophy was a conservative one and immediately began her involvement in grass roots democracy. Lois went on to serve in numerous capacities on Progressive Conservative riding association boards and in campaigns at both the provincial and federal levels.
In 1995, Lois worked for the Legislative Assembly as an assistant to The Honourable Frank Klees, MPP She was involved with legislative reform at Queen's Park and acted as Mr. Klees’ liaison with the Premier’s Office, the Cabinet and the Caucus.
She went on to become Mr. Klees’ Executive Assistant and Constituency Office Manager where she had the privilege of helping constituents resolve problems and where she honed her ability to navigate government bureaucracy at every level.
In 2001, Lois moved from the public to the private sector when she became an entrepreneur alongside her husband, Kelvin. Together they run Return to Work Solutions, which helps industry see injured employees return to work safely and cost-effectively. From 2001 to 2003, Lois was a public appointee to the Board of the College of Dental Hygienists, where she was part of a team responsible for the management of a significant budget, a large investment portfolio, and the management of Ontario standards of practice In 2005, Lois was elected to the National Council of the Conservative Party of Canada, where she is actively involved in the management and direction of the Party. This high profile position has also allowed her to develop working relationships with many MPs and our Prime Minister.
Lois and Kelvin, who have been married for 31 years, have two daughters, Shannon and Kristen. Shannon recently completed a graduate degree in Education and plans to teach in York Region. Kristen is currently traveling the globe, having received a BA in Communication as well as a BA in Neuro-Psychology from Concordia University. Lois herself is pursuing a BA in economics through the University of Waterloo’s Distance Education Program.
Lois came away from the last election with her reputation intact and with the support of close to 23,000 voters. She learned a lot from the last campaign.
Lois is busy in many capacities. She has organized "Paper to Afghanistan schools". Cabinet shuffles create large amounts of recycle in unused letterhead. Through the Caucus Liaison Committee of the National Council, she spearheaded a project to see this paper (minus the letterhead) made available to an NGO in Afghanistan who are collecting supplies for local schools. She is also organizing a tour of the new War Museum for our local Veterans.
