The 1st Annual TV Week Logie Awards (as they would come to be known) were the first awards ever to be awarded for work on Australian television. Television had began in Australia only three year prior in 1956. No ceremony took place and awards were given in only eight categories, two of which were for American programmes. Although there was television in Sydney by 1959, the awards were for Melbourne television only.

The winner of the TV Star of the Year Award, which in later years would become the Gold Logie Award for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television, was awarded to Graham Kennedy and Panda Lisner from GTV-9's In Melbourne Tonight.
