[edit] Large Category
How about creating loads of different subcatergories. For instance. TV programs, TV channels, Radio Stations, Universities and so on and so forth. I noticed there are no Ulster flags on here. Ulster flags are very rare to come accross on the net. But i also notice there are plenty of rep of ireland flags. WayneGrills 23:30, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
- I agree, there can also be software, sports, companies/corporations. Shall we get started? :)Gflores Talk 05:58, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

- If only I knew how to do it :P I wil see what I can learn quicklyWayne Grills 16:30, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Organize
I'm gonna go ahead and try to organize this mess. JedOs 23:45, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
I am done with Category: Computer software logos AND Category: Computer hardware logos. I'm now starting on Category: Game developer logos. Next I will do Oil company logos, telescope company logos, they should be really easy JedOs 07:12, 3 December 2005 (UTC)
I am working on getting radio station logos into a separate subcategory.--Hillrhpc 01:33, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] background
How do you make a picture which gets the background colour depending on what the background on the page is? For examle Image:Liverpool FC logo.png which does not have a white background on this page but would have if the background was white. Arnemann 13:42, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
- You make it with a transparent background. — J3ff 01:47, 8 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Low-resolution
Why do logos have to be low-resolution? In the press packs they provide high quality ones for uses like on Wikipedia. --Thorpe | talk 19:09, 19 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Supercat
Is there a way of getting logos out of the supercat (ie Category:Logos), when they are put in a subcat. Otherwise theres no way of knowing what logos have been categorised and which havent. ::Supergolden:: 16:55, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- By removing the [[Category:Logo]]<nowiki> and replacing it with <nowiki>[[Category:XYZ logo]]<nowiki>, that is supposed to happen automatically, but I've noticed a glitch where sometimes it doesn't.--~~~~
- I understand that bit, but the template {{logo}} puts everything in Category:Logos, even if there is no [[Category:Logos]] on the page. Obviously the template must stay on the image, so how can you get the image out of Category:Logos? ::Supergolden:: 10:24, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

- I've added this issue to the Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) page with little response so far. I think I've figured out how to modify the template but the template is protected and only an admin can change it. On the other hand, maybe I can create my own logo2 template that copies most of it and just changes it to accept the category page as a parameter. Before taking that step I want to see if I get any more responses at the pump. --JeffW 22:30, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

- I've created the logo2 template. To use it add the subcategory in the template invocation, thusly {{logo2|Sports logos}} . If you don't include the parameter it defaults to Logos. --JeffW 22:28, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

- I think it would be better to get the {{logo}} template edited, rather than set out with a new duplicate. You can request an admin to do this at Wikipedia:Requests for administrator attention ::Supergolden:: 13:51, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sports
I've been moving logs out of the main cat by replacing {{logo}} with {{sports-logo}} - So far, I've gone through #-Aa. There's quite a few! I think we're going to have to split up the sports category further, and it's probably worth doing sooner rather than later, to save effort. SeventyThree(Talk) 20:16, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
- Try the logo2 template so you don't have to create a new template for every new catagory. --JeffW 22:28, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
-
- Perfect. Now we just need to decide what categories to use. SeventyThree(Talk) 06:19, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] University and Event logos
I also have been adding logos to {{Univ-logo}} and {{Event logo}}, but for some reason these cats won't show up on the Logos subcat section.</nowiki>
- They're there but you don't see them because the Wikipedia software breaks the subcategory pages into the same alphabetical groups that article pages are broken down into. So to find the University logos category page go to U. But it doesn't show up on the first U page because Uni is alphabetized three pages further down, but if you skip down it is there. So just keep emptying the main category and eventually you'll get to where you can see all the categories on the first page.
- BTW, you can now use the logo2 template to avoid having to create a new template for every subcategory. --JeffW 22:41, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Emptying the main Category
{{logo}} has now been edited by Frazzydee to be like the short lived {{logo2}}. To categorise logos, replace the text {{logo}} with {{logo|Foo logos}}, where 'Foo logos' is the desired subcategory. I am making a start with Category:Military logos ::Supergolden:: 14:35, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
I have just finished moving about 200 articles to Category:University logos {{univ-logo}}. We just have about 25,000 more to go..... Smiker 08:23, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] software and hardware
I've just gone through Category:Computer software logos and weeded out the software company logos. If a logo is used for both the company and product, I suggest it goes in both Category:Computer software logos and Category:Company logos. I was about to move onto Category:Computer hardware logos, but it's populated by a special template, Template:Computer hardware logo. What to do?
I'd like to replace it with the new improved Template:Logo, but they don't have identical text and I Am Not A Lawyer. Any suggestions? Would TfD be appropriate? SeventyThree(Talk) 05:43, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Subcats
I've just used AWB to look for subcats of Category:Logos, and found only one hidden - Category:Band logos. I've sorted that using a space, so as of now all the linked subcats are visible on the main page. Category:Film and television logo descriptions is sorted by * rather than a space, because it's subtly different to the rest of the subcats. If the subcats sorted by * drop off the first page, we'll know that the categories have spilt over - although I don't think that'll happen. SeventyThree(Talk) 05:01, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Merging Drugs and Medications
I've put Category:Medication logos and Category:Drug logos up for merging at CfD. See here for the listing. SeventyThree(Talk) 02:47, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Merging Commercial and Company
On a related point to the above, should Category:Commercial logos be merged with Category:Company logos? it seems they are more or less the same thing. Or, if not, I think the function of each should be clarified. ::Supergolden:: 08:45, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
- I think we should keep Category:Company logos free of things which aren't companies. Perhaps a Category:Product logos? I agree that Category:Commercial logos is a confusing name, and I'm not sure what the intention of the category is - but it's contents look like products to me. The few things I've added to there were products. SeventyThree(Talk) 09:39, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
-
- I also think that there is a need for a category for Retail Logos or Store Logos. Many of the logos in Commercial Logos (including some that I sorted to put there) are logos for supermarkets, department stores, etc. --Hillrhpc 15:18, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- I would have thought that 'Store logos' is a subcat of Company logos? I agree with 73 that 'Product logos' or maybe 'Brand logos' would be a better name for Commercial logos. ::Supergolden:: 08:32, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

- Category:Brand logos sounds too vague to me - is ASDA a brand or a company? Now that it's been taken over by Wal-mart, it's not a distinct company. ASDA-brand foods exist as well, so maybe it's both. Category:Retail logos would be a good one to put shops in. SeventyThree(Talk) 17:57, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

- No comments for a week, so I'm going to go ahead and make Category:Retail logos (as a parent of the main category, for now) SeventyThree(Talk) 13:00, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] nogallery tag
Yesterday, User:Ed g2s added the __NOGALLERY__ tag to the category page (it hides all the images behind links). Personally, I find this very annoying, so I've reverted.
I'm guessing that it was done to save bandwidth or increase loading times for people on a slow connection - not something I have a problem with here, but I was wondering what other people thought. SeventyThree(Talk) 16:46, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
- Actualy it's mostly a copyright policy thing, these categories are basicaly giant galleries of fair use images. That is generaly considered a Bad Thing under our policy, but in the past it was unavoidable. So the __NOGALLERY__ command was implemented to allow thumbnails to be turned off in categories that list unfree images. --Sherool (talk) 17:42, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
-
- The problem now is there is no convenient way to simply browse through images to find ones that might be easy to save (e.g. logos which are immediately recognizable where finding a source would be trivial). DHowell 19:24, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
