Locknut

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A locknut (lock nut or locking nut) is a nut that is used to stop some other nut or similar component from working loose. Locknuts are generally used when some part of a machine spins. Bicycles, wheels on axles, pipes, sanders, and grinders all use locknuts of some kind. In the context of power transmission, locknuts are used to securely fasten gears and bearings to shafts or spindles. However locknuts are not only used in the context of spinning parts; they are generally used when there is any concern about fastenings working loose over time. There are various kinds of lock nuts, including the castellated nut.
