[edit] Plot Summary

When Nore was 16 and while she was at boarding school, her mother died. It is now the following year while Nore is still at school and continuing to grieve the loss of her mother and to deal with the shock of her father's re-marrying. Over the summer break, Nore goes to her new home, a Confederate-era plantation, to meet her new stepmother Lisette, stepbrother Gabe, and stepsister Josie. At first, "everything seems to be all right".[1]

Soon, however, she senses something amiss about her new step-family: Lisette looks too young and beautiful for her age, Josie seems too miserable and pessimistic for a thirteen year-old, Gabe seems agitated no matter what.

Then, events occur which further prod Nore's suspicious. Nore is haunted by dreams of her mother who urges Nore to leave the plantation with dad. Thirteen-year-old Josie claims she was in a fire at a circus, but Nore knows that was forty years prior. Nore finds an old picture of Gabe wearing "old fashioned cloths." The two go sailing, Nore falls overboard, but Gabe sails away, and Nore must fight for her life.

Nore begins to investigate. She turns up bizarre, frightening facts, but her new knowledge leads to her being put in more life-threatening situations.
