Lochau

Lochau is a municipality in the federal state of Vorarlberg, Austria. It is located at 47°31′48″N, 9°44′45″E, on Lake Constance, in the Bregenz district near the border to Germany. Lochau has a population of 5,713 (December 31, 2002).

50.3% of the municipality's area is forest. The Pfänder mountain is part of the municipality, also being the main mountain above Bregenz. In the west, the Laiblach river forms the border to the German town of Lindau.

The Habsburgs reigned over their Vorarlberg lands alternately from Tyrol and Further Austria. From 1805 to 1814 the municipality belonged to Bavaria, then again to Austria. In 1861 it became part of the Austrian Federal State of Vorarlberg. Between 1945 and 1955 the municipality was part of the French occupation zone.
